I reread your piece and I find it to be lacking, though you will dismiss me as emotional, I am not. I have a different world-view. I am familiar with sapience, and I am familiar with many simpler individuals who make this world a better place than you or I.

Consider the farmer that I used to buy most of my food from. (We since moved away.) He was a simple minded man. He would never test for this gene, and yet he is doing exactly what every Earth-loving person respects. He grows his food organically, and feeds his cattle properly. He wishes for no more than he has. But he should not be "allowed" to produce children because he is unwise?

I note that your 'solution' is not new. I have heard these arguments before, mostly in genocidal writings by philosophers such as Margaret Sanger, greedy elitists eying the resources of Africa and the half-educated who believe the drivel tossed at them by their professors.

Believing that it is better to commit fraud than coercion indicates a serious character deficit. Your 'kindness' is no less than an attempt to change the course of humanity in a manufactured and unchallenged way. It is the cowards way.

Babs,

I have no idea how old you are, not that it matters. But I would that, if you are young enough, remember your beliefs, convictions, and hurtful words twenty years from now.

There is only one viable solution for overpopulation: STOP REPRODUCING. We are rapidly killing ourselves and our host planet, and we humans have become virtually no different than a bunch of viruses. The only difference is that we KNOW what we are doing, and yet we continue to do it anyway.

No responsible person can reproduce and then turn around and say that they are trying to help. That mindset is literally so illogical that it borders on delusional behavior.

George Mobus

Stephen,

True that, given the overshoot (based on carrying capacity analysis) the "solution" would be to cease reproduction for the majority. But someone needs to reproduce in order to maintain the presence of the genus. By the rules of evolution and assuming we want people to live in the future who can find balance (sustainability) with nature, I would vote that the higher sapient people continue to reproduce but do so only up to the limits of the carrying capacity. I don't think it is an all or none proposition.

George
